Coatlicue’s Wisdom: Reverence for the Feminine Divine
Project type

2018

Coatlicue was the Aztec mother-goddess of the gods, sun, moon, and stars, who nourished existence through her divine feminine capacity. Revered as both creator and destroyer, she embodies the paradox of life and death—earth that sustains all living things while reclaiming them in an eternal cycle of regeneration. Coatlicue represents the ancient acknowledgment of female power as both beneficent and independent, a force that shaped the cosmos and sustained humanity. Most indigenous cultures have been matriarchal where women’s voices are valued and honored. Through this work, we are reminded that female representations of the divine have existed across time, yet in modern society, women's agency and right to autonomy are too often denied. Just as Coatlicue wielded sacred power, so must women and girls be granted their inherent right to self-determination and consent over their bodies and personhood. This painting calls for a return to reverence for the feminine, affirming its vital role in shaping a just and balanced world.
