Revolución

The Zapatistas wear masks in order to be seen. For centuries indigenous people had been ‘the ones without faces, the ones without voices’. In Mexico, indigenous people have been resisting repression, exploitation, racism, genocide, poverty and inequality for centuries (they stand against colonialism and its legacy of exclusion). Wearing a mask is a way the Zapatistas invite everyone into the struggle. The Zapatista movement in Mexico is a part of the country’s history of resistance. Mexican history overall is a testament to self-empowerment; full of examples of people resisting persecution and standing against injustice. The people have fought long and hard for freedom and dignity, especially the women. This piece highlights the courage of women. The image of the rose celebrates over 100K years of indigenous culture and the joy and fortitude of women. Gold honors their unwavering courage. Resistance movements have been carried by women across the planet. This piece is inspired by the Zapatista Guerreras who won their independence and self-government. The pattern represents the world famous Talavera pottery of the state of Puebla (artist's birthplace). This is a work that celebrates the spirit of resistance, the power of community and the beautiful art, culture and inventions Mexico has shared with the world.
