The Silent

This piece is inspired by the trafficking, kidnapping and
murder of girls and women in Ciudad Juárez. It is a comment on
the global predominance of misogyny. Impunity for femicide (killing
of women and girls by men because they are women and girls) is routine because
violence against women is viewed with no priority and many
times, disinterest. In the ‘Valley of Death’ more than 1500 tortured,
raped and mutilated bodies of Indigenous girls and women have been found.
Dark hair, dark skin, dark eyes, a slender or young-looking body
makes you a target if you are a girl or woman. The military, police
and millions of foreign male visitors demand the access to and use of the
bodies of women and girls in this border city. The skulls are painted with traditional
Mexican Talavera designs to represent the beauty of the culture
the tormented women and girls of Juárez are from. Amate paper is
still made by the Otomi in the tradition of the Aztecs. Here lies a
30,000 year old highly creative culture; in a society controlled by
the whims of men.
